Chinese cupping is an ancient Chinese technique in which a hollow cup is attached to the skin surface by negative pressure. Cups used can be left on for few minutes (static cupping) or can be moved (sliding cupping/dynamic cupping). This suction under the cups pulls on to the tissue underneath the skin which helps loosen the tissue and relieve pain. It is used to increase circulation of blood and lymph vessels. It is safely done by a Registered Physiotherapist without using fire at Lifecare Physiotherapy.

Key benefits include:

• Reduces muscle tightness and pain
The suction helps release deep knots and tension patterns that are hard to reach with regular pressure.

• Improves circulation and blood flow
By drawing blood to the area, cupping brings fresh oxygen and nutrients to help tissues heal faster.

• Decreases inflammation
Improved circulation helps remove metabolic waste (the stuff that can cause pain, stiffness, and swelling).

• Promotes relaxation and stress relief
The nervous system responds to cupping with a calming effect, reducing muscle guarding and stress.

• Increases range of motion and flexibility
Loosening the fascia (the layer that holds muscles together) can improve movement in restricted areas like the neck, shoulders, hips, and lower back.

• Supports athletic recovery and performance
Many athletes use cupping to recover between training sessions, reduce muscle soreness, and maintain mobility.

• May reduce scar tissue and fascial restrictions
Helpful for post-surgery or long-standing tight areas.

Common Conditions Cupping May Help With

Upper and lower back pain

Neck and shoulder tension

Headaches and TMJ tightness

Hip or IT band tightness

Post-exercise muscle soreness

Chronic muscle stiffness

Stress-related muscle tension

What to Expect After Treatment:

It’s normal to have temporary circular marks after cupping. They are not bruises; they’re signs of increased circulation and typically fade within 3–7 days.
