Physiotherapy- Frequently Asked Questions

What is physiotherapy?

Physiotherapy helps you manage pain, recover from injuries, and improve movement, strength, and balance. Treatment may include manual therapy, soft-tissue massage, therapeutic exercises, dry needling, acupuncture, electrotherapy, activity modification and education, depending on your needs and with your consent. At LifeCare Physiotherapy and Wellness, your physiotherapist develops a personalized treatment plan to support your recovery and everyday activities.

What conditions can physiotherapy help with?
At LifeCare Physiotherapy, we help patients with back and neck pain, joint pain, sports injuries, and recovery after surgery. We also offer pelvic floor physiotherapy, vestibular rehabilitation for dizziness and balance concerns, concussion rehabilitation, and care following workplace injuries or motor vehicle accidents.

Do I need a doctor’s referral?
You can generally book a private physiotherapy appointment in Ontario without a doctor’s referral.

What happens during my first appointment?
Your physiotherapist will discuss your symptoms, medical history, and goals, then assess relevant movement, strength, and function. They will explain their findings and discuss treatment options with you. Treatment or home exercises may begin at this appointment when appropriate.

What should I bring?
Please bring your insurance details, a list of medications, and any relevant referral letters, imaging reports, or surgical instructions. Wear comfortable clothing that allows access to the area being assessed.

Will physiotherapy hurt?
Some assessments or exercises may cause temporary discomfort. Tell your physiotherapist how you feel so they can adjust your treatment. Your comfort and consent matter throughout your care.

What treatments might be included?
Depending on your assessment, treatment may include exercises, hands-on therapy, education, and advice about daily activities. Acupuncture, dry needling, shockwave therapy, or other modalities may be considered when appropriate and with your consent.

How many appointments will I need?
The number of visits depends on your condition, goals, and progress. Your physiotherapist will discuss a recommended plan and reassess it as you improve.

Do I need to do exercises at home?
Home exercises are often an important part of rehabilitation. Your physiotherapist will explain what to do, how often to do it, and how to adjust exercises if they cause symptoms.

Is physiotherapy covered by insurance?
Many extended health insurance plans cover physiotherapy, but coverage limits and referral requirements vary. Check your plan for details about your available benefits.

Do you offer direct billing?
LifeCare offers direct billing to majority of insurance providers, subject to your plan’s eligibility and the insurer’s approval. Please contact us before your appointment to confirm. Any amount not covered remains your responsibility.
